How to find us

Old Castle Lachlan is about six miles south of the village of Strachur in Argyll, Scotland, on a single track road, the B8000, a turning off the A886.

Travel by Car

The journey out of Strachur takes you along the lochside, over farming uplands and through a lovely ancient wood of native beech, oak and ash to Strathlachlan Church. Beyond the church, an avenue of magnificent lime trees, part of the designed landscape of the early 19th century, heralds arrival at, first, Kilmorie Chapel, then Inver Restaurant.

You can park at both locations for access to the Old Castle.

Access may be limited for people who have difficulty walking.

Dogs must be kept under control.

You can come by sea too if you like – Lachlan Bay, towards the northern end of Loch Fyne, Scotland’s longest sea loch, offers safe anchorage and there are moorings and facilities for sailors at Inveraray, Strachur, Otter Ferry, and Portavadie.

Travel from Glasgow by public transport

Train - From Glasgow Central Station, take the train to Gourock. There are two trains, one stopping at all local stations and another which stops at less but it doesn't matter which train you choose.

Ferry - At Gourock train station walk through the station to the connecting ferry terminal. There are passenger ferries here to Dunoon and also to Kilcreggan - take the Dunoon boat (bigger of the two). It's a bit like a bus, you just que up and get on then pay on the boat. The website will give you times and fares. www.argyllferries.co.uk/timetables-and-fares.htm

Taxi - Dunoon is the largest of the towns nearby the castle There are buses which will take you as far as the village of Strachur but no service to the castle. Instead, we suggest booking a taxi with local company Taxi George. George is great at picking folk up from the ferry terminal and giving a wee guided tour up to the castle. You can contact him via his website to find out costs for this. www.taxigeorgedunoon.co.uk
