Specialist work

Our plans have been costed by a quantity surveyor. The total needed is likely to be around £2 millions. Costs include work by numerous specialists - architect, landscape architect, structural engineer, project manager, archaeologist, material scientist, arboriculturist  - as well as building contractors, contingencies and VAT.

Input by volunteers and the Maclachlan Estate is adding substantial value to the project at no cost.

The project will take at least five years.We are tackling it in phases.

Phase One
Emergency work to deal with the most fragile parts of the building:
Setting up and protecting the site with a compound, site hut, and scaffolding.
Repairs to the NW corner and south entrance wall and ramp, high level masonry consolidation and props to vaults.
Cost:  £150,000

Phase Two
Repairing the wall walk and wall heads, controlling the ivy, turf capping, chimney capping.
Cost:     £350,000

Phase Three
Work on the NW and NE elevations
Further repairs and consolidation of NW corner and vaulted rooms and surface the entrance ramp.
Consolidate the well, north and south staircases, fireplace and general masonry.
Cost:     £320,000

Phase Four
Work on the SW and SE elevations
General masonry repairs, and repairs to side wall and entrance wall.
Cost:  £260,000

Phase Five
Access and landscape improvements
Internal surfaces, paths, new gate and staircases, handrails, platforms, tensile roof, gallery, interpretation, tree surgery, tree planting, clearance of bracken and rhododendron, new bridge and car park.
Cost:  £800,000

Donors and funders can support specific phases or distinct elements such as scaffolding costs, the new bridge, tree planting, or repairing the vaulted rooms.
