The Funding
Progress so far
The Lachlan Trust is run by volunteers with the support of the Maclachlan Estate. We have no paid staff or overheads. All of the money we raise is spent on our conservation projects. We successfully raised £100,000 to conserve Kilmorie Chapel, the resting place of the Maclachlan clan chiefs. That award-winning scheme was completed in 2006.
To date, the Trust has been able to commission specialists to conduct an initial survey of the Old Castle and to draw up outline conservation and overall project plans and costings. This website has been developed as the project's main communications and fund-raising vehicle. Important relationships have been developed with key organisations such as Historic Scotland, Clan MacLachlan Society, Strathlachlan Community Association and Argyll and Bute Council. These activities have been funded through contributions in cash and kind from the Maclachlan Estate, Historic Scotland, branches of the Clan Maclachlan Society, the sale of artwork, and from private individuals and consultants working on reduced rates or a pro bono basis.
The target
To prevent the collapse of the castle and progress the plans we now need to raise £2 millions over five years. Our initial target is £150,000 for emergency work and set up in Phase One.
Our fund-raising strategy depends on winning:
- grants from public bodies and charitable trusts
- income from commercial sponsors
- major gifts from individual donors
- and smaller gifts from a large number of individuals
An international 'family' of supporters
There is an international dimension to the appeal for funds. We are reaching out and asking everyone connected to Clan Maclachlan around the world, to everyone interested in Scottish heritage, the beauty of Scotland's landscapes and its rich biodiversity to help us. Old Castle Lachlan is protected in law as an ancient monument. The whole site has historic significance and offers contemporary visitors a rich experience. It contributes to the resilience of social and economic life in a remote rural community.
