Storybank

Welcome to our Storybank – a growing online library of stories people have told us about Old Castle Lachlan.

The castle itself has a long history with many twists and turns, dramas, mysteries, tragedies and triumphs. Visitors, Maclachlan clan members and people living locally also have valuable memories and stories to tell about what has happened there and what the castle means to them.

Scotland’s stories

We want to ensure all these stories continue to be told and known about as part of Scotland’s rich heritage in storytelling.  In this aim we are partners with the Scottish Storytelling Centre in Edinburgh. We also liaise with other heritage and history organisations to promote and celebrate life in our area, such as Here We Are, the local history and community resource centre in Cairndow at the head of Loch Fyne.

We are inspired by the work of John Francis Campbell of Islay (1821 – 1885) who undertook a huge cultural enterprise to collect Gaelic stories, tales and poems before they were lost forever. These were published between 1860 and 62 in four volumes of Popular Tales of the West Highlands. Another local hero,Sir Fitzroy Maclean of Strachur who died in 1996, also championed the West Highland tradition of storytelling with his book West Highland Tales. His wife, Lady Veronica, told a story about the Old Castle in her memoir Past Forgetting, published in 2002.
