A grant of £25,000 has been awarded to the Old Castle Lachlan conservation project. The grant will enable essential preparatory work to be done to specify exactly what needs to be done to undertake a scheme of emergency repairs. The work aims to repair a huge crack to one corner of the castle, prop up the ceilings of some vaulted rooms in danger of collapse, consolidate some dangerous masonry and repair the retaining wall supporting the ramp that leads to the entrance of the old castle.
The Heritage Lottery Fund, which has made the grant, is supporting the development of these proposals so that it can consider making a grant of around £250,000 to implement the emergency repairs.
The Lachlan Trust will submit its detailed proposals later this year and a decision on the full grant will be known by March 2012 at the latest.
